Urika’s HLE Nepal journey
Urika has been with HLE Nepal for more than four years and it’s her strong belief in diversity, the benefits of cross-cultural operation, and continuous learning that has shaped her outstanding work ethic.
It all started with a role as a member of our broker support team.
The role saw her completing home loan processing tasks for our team of Sydney mortgage brokers, learning the ropes of the entire mortgage application process.
“One shouldn’t wait for management to promote you and provide you with leadership skills after that,” Urika said.
“Instead, one should demonstrate the managerial skills priorly at one’s role, irrespective of the position, so it gives management a reason to consider you for promotion”.
Through her assertiveness, she quickly became broker support manager and, eventually, our managing director in a short span of time.
It’s nearly unheard of in a country where there’s a dearth of young female leaders she is leading a western company of almost 70 staff and she is only in her mid-twenties.
A day in the life of HLE Nepal’s managing director
Her main areas of responsibility include:
- Overseeing the offshoring of tasks to Nepal from Sydney.
- Motivating Nepal staff to consistently achieve high productivity.
- Develop future leaders to take up managerial positions.
- Monitoring hiring and ensure we build an elite team in Nepal.
- Ensuring the Nepal office meets all legal / compliance and business administration requirements.
- Acting as a spokesperson for the company and representing the company to enhance its brand.
What skills do you learn at HLE Nepal?
Urika believes that the skills you can learn at HLE Nepal are beneficial throughout your entire career, no matter where the road takes you.
Since we’re wholly-owned by a Western company, you get a different perspective on work ethic compared to Nepal.
Dealing with Australian clients and banks means you also build your confidence, industry knowledge, and skills in communication and project management.
What does Urika think about our management structure?
Urika believes HLE Nepal is one of the best places to work in Nepal because our management structure is flat, transparent, and managers acknowledge the ideas and opinions of staff.
“We have an open-door policy and are open to listening to the grievances of staff,” she said.
More than that, there are real opportunities for staff willing to put in the time for training and development.
This is unique to many Western companies that simply offshore administration or accounts tasks overseas.
Urika is an MBA graduate specialising in finance but her interests and specialisations range from international business, organizational behaviour and relations, human resources, strategic management, and business policies.
Before that, she worked as a counsellor which gave her invaluable skills to communication skills.
She’s passionate about mentoring underprivileged youth in their studies, career goals, personality development, and computer skills.
A true believer in training and development
Getting her MBA was just the start for Urika because she has long recognised the power of continually upgrading your skills.
Over the past four years, she has undertaken the following training and plans to undertake further study:
- Lean Six Sigma: Improve Productivity (University of Sydney)
- Innovation Champ Training (organised by BrainStore)
- Internal Quality Auditor Training on ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 19011 International Standards – Guidelines for Auditing Management System (organised by URS Nepal P. Limited)
- Management and Leadership (organised by KUSOM)
- Women Leadership Summit 2017 (organised by Ujyalo Foundation)

Urika has been and continues to be an exemplary leader for the HLE Nepal team and loves to help others and spread wisdom.
